Creating multilingual eLearning simulations for a global online retailer

As one of the largest online retail companies in the world, our client has built its global brand on exceptional and innovative customer service. This commitment to excellence drove them to approach us to develop a series of highly interactive eLearning simulators for their enterprise training programme, aimed at onboarding new agents across the globe.

Overcoming complexity and technical issues to create localization-ready content

Our client needed an efficient way to localize, engineer, and linguistically test some interactive training tutorials. Given the complexity of the design, they sought a partner with deep, cross-disciplinary expertise to achieve this.

The issues we encountered:

  • The files were localized in Articulate Storyline using the standard process. However, the functionality of the localized courses did not perform as expected, and some features failed entirely.
  • A serious error in the simulator code prevented the names and default values of certain variables and triggers from being translated. This caused the localized functionality to break.

To devise an efficient, scalable method for localizing eLearning content in Articulate Rise and Storyline

Using our extensive experience in delivering similar projects, we:

  • Identified certain variables and triggers with hard-coded values
  • Converted these values to translatable string variables, in line with software development best practices
  • Implemented this fix in the English master

While Articulate Storyline is a popular tool known for its simplicity and adaptability, it has limitations when it comes to generating localization-ready content at scale. The above steps ensured our solution was localization-ready and scalable, meaning it could be implemented without needing to repeat the fix across all 13 language versions individually.

Delivering efficiencies with cost-effective localization processes and continuous quality tracking

By designing a sleek, streamlined method for localizing, engineering, and linguistically testing the eLearning simulators, we not only fulfilled the client’s brief but set a benchmark for scalable, efficient localization. We also developed a custom dashboard to track language quality scores over time, ensuring continuous improvement and consistency across all locales.

The depth and breadth of our proposal convinced the online retailer to choose us over their existing pool of global language service providers (LSPs). As a result, we successfully localized seven courses in the first 12 months of the programme, delivering significant results for our client.
